Academy of Reading (AoR) is a researched-based reading intervention software tool designed to support students who have gaps in their foundational reading skills. The program helps students build accuracy and automaticity in letter-sound matching, decoding, and phonics but does not focus intensively on vocabulary or comprehension. This tool should only be used with students that have an intensive need for support with literacy skills.

Schools should follow the student selection criteria and guidelines provided on the Recommendations for Effective Use of Academy of Reading document created by Wake County's Literacy Team. AoR requires monitoring and coaching by a trained Academy of Reading teacher. Instruction can be delivered during students' elective time or other sustained time designated to deliver interventions. The recommended schedule is 3-5 times per week 35-45 minutes each session. Students are unlikely to make significant gains without adequate time in the program. Students participating in Academy of Reading will need additional support with vocabulary development and comprehension.
